The Tomioka Silk Mill Enthusiast Club is an organization that, recognizing and loving the historical, cultural, and industrial legacy value of the Tomioka Silk Mill, promotes citizen campaign for the purpose of registering the Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Industrial Heritage as a world heritage.
Group travel overview
The Tomioka Silk Mill Enthusiast Club, which is a specified nonprofit corporation, was established in 1988, which followed the year Katakura Industries Co., Ltd., the owner of the silk mill, stopped running the silk mill for an unavoidable reason.
This club originated in the activities of a few people who continued to hold study meetings in order to learn the value of the Tomioka Silk Mill. In August 2003 when the Gunma Prefecture announced that it would promote the registration of the silk mill as a world heritage, the club leaders decided to open the club to all citizens. As a result, a lot of people joined the club, including those who were willing to herald the citizen campaign that was expected to evolve and grow in the future for the registration.
Nineteen years have passed since the club started. When it started, only a few people joined it. Its present membership, including personal and corporate members, has exceeded 1300 since 2003 when the Gunma Prefecture announced its activities for promoting registration as a world heritage and the heritage was enrolled in the UNESCO tentative list of world heritage candidates. Considering that it is important to make the value of the Tomioka Silk Mill understood by local citizens, the club has made enlightenment efforts to advertize the silk mill by producing various goods. Since the silk mill was enrolled in the tentative list of world heritage candidates, it has attracted increasing attention from inside and outside the country. In this circumstance, the club plans to continue its activities that aim at the registration of this historical building, Japan is proud of, as a world heritage and will finally lead to cultural and economic development of the local community.
